Using the Moderation API requires authentication so that the gateway knows who is making requests and what permissions you have. Create an API token to grant access to the API to perform actions. You can also authenticate with API keys, but these keys have several limitations that make them less secure than API tokens. Whenever possible, use API tokens to interact with the Moderation API.
To create an API token, from the Moderator dashboard, go to My Profile → API Tokens and select Create Token. For more information on how to create and troubleshoot API tokens, refer to our API fundamentals and compare rate limits in Public vs Premium API.

Public vs Premium API
Compare quotas, burst limits, dedicated network resources, and service level agreements (SLA) between our free Community Public API and the enterprise-grade Premium API.
Notice on Non-Commercial & Fair Use: The Moderator Public API is free for community Discord servers, student research, and non-commercial moderation bots. If you operate commercial bot services, multi-guild platforms, charge user fees, or exceed 1,000 requests/day, your integration requires a Premium API license.

Rate Limits & Quota Architecture
All API responses include standard rate limit response headers so your applications can dynamically monitor consumed capacity:
X-RateLimit-Limit
The maximum number of requests allowed within the current sliding window.
X-RateLimit-Remaining
The remaining number of request credits available in the active period.
X-RateLimit-Reset
Unix epoch timestamp when the current rate limit credits reset.
Commercial vs Community Policy
You are permitted to use the Public API free of charge if you are developing non-commercial open source projects, maintaining a single community server, or conducting educational research. If your moderation bot monetizes via premium subscription tiers, charges per guild, or integrates with third-party payment gateways, you must upgrade to a commercial agreement.
